Gourock High School and Greenock Academy are in the process of merging together.  In August 2011, the pupils and staff of the school will transfer into a new building in the Bayhill area of Gourock.  The new school, Clydeview Academy will have a role of around 1230 pupils.

Both schools continue to operate independently and will spend some time in session 2010-2011, celebrating their achievements, whilst saying farewell to their old school buildings!

The new building is currently being completed and is already five weeks ahead of schedule, with an expected hand over date to Inverclyde Council, some time in May 2010.

So what progress has already been made?

  1. The two Head Teachers have been meeting on a regular basis over this last session to ensure that the transition to the new school is well planned and is fully supported by Inverclyde Council.
  2. The Parent Councils are liaising with Inverclyde Education Services to ensure that the needs of all pupils are addressed in the merger process.  At present, they are involved in discussions regarding the use of accommodation, school role and the design of the school building.
  3. Staff from both schools have been meeting on a regular basis to ensure that the development of Curriculum for Excellence programmes are building upon the best practices of both schools.  The main focus has been towards the development of common S1, S3 and S5/6 curriculum programmes.
  4. The pupil councils met in May 2010 to discuss the progress of the new school plans and to indicate their hopes and wishes for the new school.
  5. A group of S3 pupils and staff from both schools have been involved in a Columba 1400 project.  This group has helped identify strategies for ensuring that pupils and staff have ample opportunities to link together in advance of the merger.
  6. Staff and pupils have already linked together for various events and even a ski trip.
  7. Staff met in August 2010 to discuss their hopes for the school.

Time-scale for the merger:

September/October 2010: The Clydeview Academy Head Teacher will be appointed.

Christmas 2010: The Senior Management of the new School will be appointed.

February 2011: The Management team of the school will be completed with the appointment of the Faculty and Subject Department Principals.

May 2011: The expected completion of the school

June 2011: Pupils and staff expected to prepare for the move to the new school building.

August 2011:  The opening of Clydeview Academy expected (subject to the completion of the building).
